Smiljan, study and the rotating-field idea
Nikola Tesla was born on 10 July 1856 in Smiljan, then within the Austrian Empire and now in Croatia. His father was a Serbian Orthodox priest; his mother was remembered in family accounts for practical ingenuity with household tools. Tesla studied engineering subjects in Graz and attended lectures in Prague, but he did not complete a university degree.
Work in Budapest and Paris put him near the rapidly changing electrical and telephone industries. Tesla later described conceiving a rotating magnetic field while walking in Budapest in 1882. The recollection was written long after the event, so historians treat the exact scene cautiously, but the field itself became central to his motor work.
New York, investors and the 1888 patents
Tesla arrived in New York in 1884 and briefly worked for an Edison organization. The relationship was short. By 1885 he was involved in his own electric-light company, a venture that did not give him control of the arc-light patents he developed. A later partnership with Alfred S. Brown and Charles F. Peck proved more consequential: their support helped establish the Tesla Electric Company and a laboratory where he could develop alternating-current motors and systems.
In 1888 Tesla presented “A New System of Alternate Current Motors and Transformers” to the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. That same period produced a closely related group of U.S. patents for motors and electrical power transmission. George Westinghouse arranged to license the technology. The commercial story is often retold as a simple duel between Tesla and Edison, but the actual network included patent lawyers, investors, factory engineers and many other inventors.
High frequency, lectures and public image
During the early 1890s, Tesla turned substantial attention to high-frequency and high-potential currents. His lectures used lamps, resonant circuits and visually striking discharges to show effects that ordinary audiences could immediately see. The resonant transformer now called the Tesla coil grew from this program of experiments.
The demonstrations made Tesla famous. They also helped create a persistent gap between what the apparatus showed and what newspapers imagined it might soon accomplish. Tesla himself encouraged expansive speculation. His writings moved easily between demonstrated effects, engineering proposals and distant visions.
Colorado Springs and Wardenclyffe
In 1899 Tesla established an experimental station at Colorado Springs, where the high altitude and open site supported work with large resonant circuits and electrical discharges. His notes document ambitious experiments, but later retellings sometimes treat every interpretation in those notes as settled physics.
Back in New York, Tesla pursued a large wireless project at Wardenclyffe on Long Island. Financier J. P. Morgan initially backed the plan. Costs rose, goals shifted and further funds did not arrive. The tower was never completed as an operating global communications or power system and was demolished in 1917. The surviving laboratory site is historically important precisely because it records both the ambition and the limits of the project.
Later years and changing reputation
Tesla continued to patent and promote ideas, including work on turbines and remote control, but his financial position weakened. He lived in New York hotels and died on 7 January 1943. The U.S. Supreme Court’s 1943 decision in a radio-patent dispute is often simplified into a declaration that Tesla “invented radio.” The ruling addressed particular patent claims and prior art; it did not award sole authorship of an entire medium.
Tesla’s posthumous reputation has moved through several phases: relative neglect, specialist historical interest, popular revival and online mythmaking. A sound biography keeps the imaginative range while testing each technical claim against the record. That approach makes him neither a saint nor a fraud, but a fascinating electrical inventor whose strongest work deserves precision.
