Timeline of Nikola Tesla

From Smiljan in 1856 to New York in 1943, with the motor patents, lectures and unfinished projects placed in order.

A working chronology

Dates help separate simultaneous developments from stories assembled later. This timeline emphasizes well-documented milestones rather than trying to list every patent, lecture or business proposal.

  1. 10 July — born in Smiljan. The village was in the Austrian Empire; it is now in Croatia.
  2. Studies in Graz. Tesla attends the Austrian Polytechnic and encounters contemporary electrical machinery, but does not complete the degree.
  3. Budapest and Paris. Work in telephone and Continental Edison settings gives Tesla practical exposure to motors and electrical systems. He later dates the rotating-field insight to Budapest in 1882.
  4. Arrival in New York. Tesla works briefly in an Edison organization before leaving.
  5. First company and setback. Tesla Electric Light & Manufacturing develops arc-light equipment. Tesla loses control of the venture and turns back toward motor work.
  6. Tesla Electric Company and polyphase patents. Backed by Alfred S. Brown and Charles F. Peck, Tesla develops motors and a system for alternating-current power transmission.
  7. A major patent group is issued. U.S. patents including 381,968 and 382,280 describe motors and electrical transmission arrangements using alternating currents.
  8. AIEE lecture. Tesla presents a new system of alternate-current motors and transformers to electrical engineers in New York.
  9. Westinghouse licensing. Arrangements bring Tesla’s AC motor and system patents into a larger commercial engineering program.
  10. High-frequency lectures and naturalization. Tesla demonstrates high-frequency, high-potential effects and becomes a U.S. citizen. Patents from this period document lighting and resonant-circuit work associated with the later Tesla coil.
  11. Public demonstrations in Chicago. The World’s Columbian Exposition becomes an important public showcase for alternating-current power and Tesla’s electrical demonstrations.
  12. Laboratory fire. A fire destroys Tesla’s South Fifth Avenue laboratory, apparatus and notes, forcing a major restart.
  13. Niagara power system comes online. The hydroelectric project uses polyphase AC technology in a system built by multiple companies and engineers. Tesla’s motor and system patents are part of the broader history.
  14. Remote-control demonstration. Tesla publicly demonstrates a radio-controlled boat at Madison Square Garden.
  15. Colorado Springs laboratory. Large resonant circuits support experiments in high-voltage and wireless effects.
  16. Wardenclyffe construction and financial crisis. A laboratory and tower rise on Long Island, but the project’s goals expand while funding collapses.
  17. Wardenclyffe tower demolished. The unfinished tower is dismantled; the laboratory building survives.
  18. Death in New York. Tesla dies at the New Yorker Hotel at age 86.

How to use a timeline

A timeline is a map, not an explanation. A patent date may mark filing, grant or publication, and those are not interchangeable. A laboratory demonstration does not prove a system could be commercialized. A newspaper prediction is evidence of public rhetoric, not evidence that the predicted machine existed.
